When she woke, she found herself in darkness. She couldn’t move. She was going to die and she had no idea why…

When the body of Lola Evans is found in a river in a local park on a cold winter’s morning, Detective Alex King and her new recruit Chloe Lane are called in to lead the hunt for the killer.

Days later, another girl goes missing, and another body is found in the water. It seems the two girls shared a troubled history, and were members of the same support group. What secrets were they keeping? And who is the monster preying on these vulnerable girls?

As the detectives start to piece together the clues, it becomes clear that the murderer’s reach goes even further – back into the painful past of Chloe Lane herself. Chloe realises that she too is in danger – as she uncovers secrets about her own lbrother’s death which someone will kill to keep hidden.

As Alex and Chloe are soon caught in a race against time to reach the next victim before it’s too late… and they must face terrifying truths from their own lives to have a chance of catching the killer.

This debut crime novel by Victoria Jenkins had me hook line and sinker within the first two pages. Very quickly my heart was pounding and my gut instinct told me I was going to love the book.

My ability to sniff out a good read very quickly was on point once again and I was right because I couldn’t leave this one alone! I read it super fast desperate to see the investigation reach its conclusion as the police race against time to to save another potential victim falling prey to the killer in this dark and twisted tale. As the story unravel we witness Lane become obsessed with her own brothers death… Was it murder or did he commit suicide? How is everything  linked?

I bloomin’ loved the two strong female crime fighting protagonists Alex King and Chloe Lane. A pair who despite being quite different and separates image by several decades made one hell of a team. Both kick ass and are deliciously flawed and extremely interesting women who made this book even more readable. In fact this story is full of compelling characters both likeable and frustratingly unlikable showing  Jenkins is as skilled at building intriguing characters as she is at crafting a story that is layered with  twists and turns that keeps your attention throughout.

This is a cracking debut that contains all the excitement of a crime thriller by the bucket load, it’s pacy, well written and it’s plot is superb with strong characters with intriguing back stories. Thoroughly recommended! I for one can’t wait to see what these two female leads have in store for us next time…
