Sarah Cole: a seamstress and a mother, convicted for her role in the murder, still protesting her innocence.

Edmund Fleetwood: an idealistic lawyer struggling with his own demons, appointed to investigate her petition for mercy.

Yet although Sarah has everything to lose, it is Edmund who becomes obsessed with the case, determined to establish why this woman seems so set on walking to the gallows…

MY REVIEW…

I will be honest this titles been on my TBR pile for a little while and I was so excited to finally get to it as its a book that I have been desperate to read ever since I saw it doing the rounds on social media.

This book was brilliant and I truly hope that my review can do it justice. This is a absolutely stunning debut, in fact discovering it was a debut blew my mind as Anna is such a talented and accomplished writer… She conjured up the atmospheric, filthy  place that London was during this period and transported me there. No mean feat, but beautifully done.

This dark and terrifying tale  is set on  the grimy streets of Victorian London and is a story that weaves an intricate web of deceit and mistrust through a tight and intricately plotted story that will hold you in its grips from start to finish!

The book opens with a gruesome scene, depicting a bloody murder, and from that moment on I was captivated by the authors ability to depict the scenes so well and was drawn into this historical whodunnit.

I love domestic and psychological thrillers, but the ones I read tend to be set in the modern day. Its a long time since I read a historically set novel and I wasn’t disappointed, and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. It’s a fast paced and deftly depicted piece of historical fiction ( however it is based on a true crime). James Greenacre and Sarah Gale are tried for the heinous crime  and are sentenced to death. But not all is as it seems! It’s well paced and full of twists and turns with enough breadcrumb clues dropped in by the author to keep you guessing. Full of interesting, complex characters, Anna’s rich almost poetic prose flows as fluidly as her story, beautifully written and highly emotive this book is a must read!
